Jake P. Walter, a 30-year-old probationary firefighter from Oakland, was tragically killed on August 17, 2017, in San Jose, California. Walter, along with a fellow firefighter, was off-duty and enjoying a night out in San Jose's Japantown when the incident occurred. The two were part of a group of firefighters from their academy class who had gone out together. The attack happened outside the Gordon Biersch Brewing Co. during the Taylor Street Night Market.
According to witnesses, the gunfire erupted without any warning, and the attack appeared to be unprovoked. Walter was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, while his colleague was treated in the intensive care unit and later stabilized.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Oliver Juinio from San Jose, was arrested shortly after the incident. Juinio was charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the shooting. He was scheduled to be arraigned on these charges. Juinio had a prior criminal record, including convictions for burglary and attempted burglary in 2010, as well as a drunk driving offense in 2015. These prior felonies counted as two strikes under California's "three strikes" law, which could result in a significantly longer prison sentence if he were convicted of the new charges.
The investigation revealed that there was no known connection between Juinio and the victims, and the attack seemed to be random. The Oakland Fire Department and the community were deeply affected by Walter's death, with many expressing their grief and support for his family and colleagues. A memorial service was held to honor Walter, highlighting his dedication to serving his hometown and his promising future in the fire department. The case against Juinio proceeded through the legal system, with the charges reflecting the severity of the crime and the impact on the community.
