Jimmy Martinez, a 54-year-old auto mechanic from Oakland, California, tragically lost his life on December 22, 2017. Martinez had previously survived a shooting incident on December 4, 2017, thanks to the intervention of his loyal dog, Chata. In that earlier incident, Martinez was shot in the hand, and Chata was shot in the face while defending him. The altercation had stemmed from a dispute over a parking space.
