Jimmy Martinez, a 54-year-old auto mechanic from Oakland, California, tragically lost his life on December 22, 2017. Martinez had previously survived a shooting incident on December 4, 2017, thanks to the intervention of his loyal dog, Chata. In that earlier incident, Martinez was shot in the hand, and Chata was shot in the face while defending him. The altercation had stemmed from a dispute over a parking space.
Despite the injuries, both Martinez and Chata were recovering and had relocated to an RV on 85th Avenue in East Oakland.
On the night of December 22, Martinez stepped outside his RV to fill up some water jugs, leaving Chata inside. Moments later, he was fatally shot by an unknown assailant following a confrontation. The shooter fled the scene before police arrived, and Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene. The Oakland police have been investigating the case but have yet to determine a motive or identify a suspect.
