On December 11, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., 75-year-old Earl Rhue was fatally shot in East Oakland, California. Rhue had been visiting family friends, Maria Rosa Keys and her daughter, Maria Martens, to watch a Golden State Warriors game. During halftime, he stepped outside to his car for a smoke break. Shortly after, gunshots were heard, and Rhue was found with gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Family and friends described Rhue as a "Renaissance man" with a diverse career. He earned a master's degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and worked as a NASA engineer. Additionally, he was a puppeteer at Children's Fairyland and, more recently, a food delivery driver.
Authorities believe the shooting was an attempted carjacking. Keys noted that Rhue was a source of strength and comfort for her family, and his sudden death has left them in shock.
As of December 13, 2024, there have been no arrests or publicly identified suspects in connection with Rhue's death.
