Ruben Antonio Garcia, a 26-year-old resident of Bakersfield, California, tragically lost his life on March 9, 2018, as a result of a drive-by shooting. The incident occurred in the 1200 block of East 10th Street, where Garcia was attending a family gathering. The shooting, which also injured two other individuals, was reported to the Bakersfield Police Department, who responded swiftly to the scene.
Despite being rushed to Kern Medical, Garcia succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Garcia's death led to the arrest of Anthony Michael Gage, who was initially charged with murder, conspiracy, and participation in a street gang. Gage, 21 at the time, was apprehended at a residence on Calcutta Drive. However, the legal proceedings took a significant turn when a Kern County jury acquitted Gage of all charges related to the shooting. Instead, Trevon Lee Foreman was found guilty of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and other related charges. Foreman, who was 26 at the time of his conviction, was arrested following a standoff at a home on Belvedere Avenue.
The court proceedings revealed that Foreman, along with Gage and Marlisha Oliver, had driven past the gathering twice before Foreman opened fire from the vehicle, striking Garcia and two others. The motive behind the shooting was linked to gang-related activities, perpetuating a cycle of violence in the community. Foreman's conviction included multiple life sentences, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the impact on the victims' families.
