Raphael Fuentes-Lee, a 23-year-old resident of Vallejo, California, was tragically found dead on April 29, 2018, in Albany, CA. His body was discovered on a bench along the Ohlone Greenway, a popular pedestrian and bicycle path, with a single gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m., and despite being transported to Highland Hospital, Fuentes-Lee succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

The investigation into Fuentes-Lee's death led to the arrest of two individuals: Kayla Gibson-Wytch, 21, of Berkeley, and Thomas Shimamura, 31, of Oakland. Witnesses and community tips played a crucial role in identifying the suspects. Gibson-Wytch was apprehended the morning after the shooting, while Shimamura was arrested later that day in Berkeley. Both were initially charged with murder and booked into Alameda County Jail.

Further developments in the case revealed that Shimamura, who has a background in film editing and sound engineering, pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. He also admitted to possessing an unregistered loaded firearm and using it during the crime. On July 17, 2019, Shimamura was sentenced to 19 years in state prison, which included six years for voluntary manslaughter, ten years for using a gun, and three years for having an unregistered firearm. The motive behind the shooting was not disclosed during the court proceedings.

Gibson-Wytch, although present during the incident, was not charged by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Witnesses reported seeing her and Shimamura together before the shooting and provided photos that helped identify them. Despite her involvement, the lack of charges against her suggests that her role in the crime was not deemed sufficient for prosecution.

The tragic death of Raphael Fuentes-Lee marked a significant event for the Albany community, being the first homicide in the city since 2015. The case highlights the importance of community cooperation in solving crimes and the complexities involved in the judicial process.
