Timothy Gillaspie, a 43-year-old resident of Santa Rosa, California, tragically lost his life on June 24, 2018. Gillaspie was attending a dinner party at a home on Garfield Park Avenue in Bennett Valley when the incident occurred. The evening took a horrific turn when Walter Ross, the estranged husband of one of the attendees, arrived at the house armed with two handguns.
Ross, who had been estranged from his wife for two years and was in the process of finalizing their divorce, opened fire upon entering the home. Gillaspie, who had never met Ross before, heroically attempted to shut the door to prevent Ross from entering, but was fatally shot in the process. He was struck multiple times in the torso and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Ross had also rigged his vehicle with an improvised explosive device, which was discovered by police officers at the scene. The device was designed to detonate when the driver's door was opened, but fortunately, it was safely disposed of by the bomb squad. Following the shooting, Ross attempted to take his own life by shooting himself in the head. He was found with life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
