Jose Raul Corrales Aguilar, a 69-year-old grandfather from Long Beach, California, was tragically killed on October 9, 2018, while watering his lawn near Canal Avenue and Sunset Street. The incident occurred when Rhyan Burrell and Terrel Warren, both armed, fired multiple shots from their vehicle. The shooting was reportedly linked to an earlier altercation involving a relative of one of the defendants and a group of students. Burrell and Warren confronted school officials about the alleged assault before driving towards a group of students walking home. Warren fired eight shots from a 9-millimeter handgun at a passing car, injuring a passenger, while Burrell fired six shots from a .40-caliber gun, fatally striking Aguilar.
The investigation led to the arrests of Burrell and Warren weeks later. The .40-caliber handgun used in the shooting was found in Burrell's refrigerator, while the 9-millimeter handgun was discovered during an unrelated arrest. Both men were charged with first-degree murder and six counts of attempted murder. In January 2025, Burrell was sentenced to life in state prison without the possibility of parole. Warren's sentencing was scheduled for February 26, 2025. The case highlighted the senseless nature of the violence, as Aguilar, a devoted grandfather and mechanic, was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
