On the evening of July 1, 2019, Ruben Lopez, a 25-year-old resident of Long Beach, California, was fatally shot in the 1200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. when Lopez, accompanied by a 19-year-old male and an 18-year-old female, got into a verbal altercation with a group of male suspects. The confrontation escalated, leading to multiple shots being fired.
Lopez, who was struck in the upper torso, managed to drive himself to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. A 17-year-old boy, who was an unintended target, was also injured in the shooting and transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the lower torso.
The investigation into Lopez's death revealed that he had initiated a physical altercation with one of the suspects before turning towards Bryant U., one of the individuals in the group. Bryant then discharged his firearm, hitting Lopez and causing his fatal injuries. On August 13, 2019, Bryant U. was arrested by Long Beach detectives and booked for murder, with bail set at $2,000,000. However, after presenting the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, it was determined that Bryant had acted in self-defense. Consequently, no charges were filed against him, and he was released from custody.
The shooting was investigated as gang-related, prompting the Long Beach Police Department to deploy additional resources and increase patrols in key areas to enhance community safety. Despite the tragic outcome, the investigation concluded that Bryant U. was not criminally liable for Lopez's death, as the evidence supported his claim of self-defense.
