On the evening of December 13, 2018, Melissa Peskey, a 40-year-old woman, was traveling with her two young children, ages 5 and 11, on Interstate 70 near Boonville, Missouri. The family was over 450 miles from their home in Hartford, South Dakota, on what was described as a road trip to visit a friend before the Christmas holiday.
