On a summer evening in New Orleans, the life of 28-year-old Jeremiah Claiborne, also known as Jeremiah Lee, was cut short in a hail of gunfire. On July 28, 2018, Claiborne became the target of a deadly mass shooting in the 3400 block of South Claiborne Avenue. The attack, which authorities believe was gang-related, also claimed the lives of 38-year-old Kurshaw Jackson and 27-year-old Taiesha Watkins, and left seven others wounded.
Claiborne, an African American male, was identified by police as the intended victim of the brazen assault.
The shooting unfolded with shocking brutality as two gunmen, one armed with an assault rifle and the other with two handguns, opened fire on Claiborne. As Claiborne attempted to flee, the assailants pursued him, firing indiscriminately into the crowd that had gathered outside a daiquiri shop. This reckless barrage of bullets led to the tragic deaths of Jackson and Watkins, who were innocent bystanders. The shooters, their identities concealed by hooded sweatshirts, fled the scene and vanished into the night.
For more than three years, the case remained a painful open wound for the families of the victims and the city of New Orleans. Investigators worked tirelessly, and their persistence eventually led to a breakthrough. In October 2021, the New Orleans Police Department announced the arrest of 32-year-old Jamal Smith in connection with the mass shooting. At the time of his arrest for the murders, Smith was already in custody on separate federal charges. He was subsequently charged with three counts of second-degree murder and seven counts of attempted second-degree murder for his alleged role in the South Claiborne tragedy.
Despite the significant development of Smith's arrest, the investigation into the horrific crime remains ongoing. Authorities have confirmed the involvement of a second gunman who has yet to be publicly identified or apprehended. The case against Jamal Smith is pending in the Louisiana court system. While he has been sentenced on unrelated federal gun and drug offenses, the final chapter in the story of Jeremiah Claiborne's death, and the quest for full justice for all the victims of that tragic night, is yet to be written.
