Anna Perez, a 24-year-old resident of Long Beach, California, tragically lost her life on December 1, 2018. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 2:00 a.m., in a parking lot near 4th Street and Pacific Avenue. Perez was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a violent altercation between two groups of people. The confrontation escalated when Thomas McCreary, a 42-year-old man from Sylmar, retrieved a firearm from his car and fired multiple shots.
One of these bullets struck Perez in the torso, leading to her immediate death at the scene.
The Long Beach Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the shooting. Witnesses described the suspect as an African American male who fled the scene in an unknown color sedan. Within a week, detectives identified and arrested McCreary, who was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. McCreary had a prior criminal record, including a conviction for first-degree residential burglary in 2007, and was on parole at the time of the shooting.
During the trial, McCreary's defense argued that he did not intend to kill Perez and that he was provoked by an unrelated group attacking his car. However, the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm. The prosecution presented evidence, including jailhouse calls between McCreary and his then-girlfriend, Samantha Kidd, discussing the gun used in the shooting. Kidd was later convicted of accessory after the fact for helping McCreary dispose of the weapon.
On August 3, 2022, McCreary was sentenced to 89 years to life in prison.
