Cassius Stroman, a 42-year-old resident of San Francisco, was tragically killed on March 10, 2019, in Oakland, California. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. in a parking lot near the Liege Spirits Lounge on Washington Street. According to witness accounts and court records, Stroman was involved in an altercation with several patrons at the bar after he asked a woman for her phone number and was rebuffed.
The situation escalated when a woman took a swing at Stroman, who allegedly swung back in self-defense, though both punches missed. At this point, Deontre Brown, a 22-year-old Oakland resident who had been in the bar but had not interacted with Stroman until then, pulled out a pistol and opened fire. Stroman was fatally shot, and a 37-year-old bystander from Rancho Cordova was wounded in the arm.
Following the shooting, Brown fled the scene and was later apprehended in Sparks, Nevada, on March 12, 2019. He was charged with murder and assault with a semi-automatic firearm. Brown was identified as the suspect through video surveillance and witness statements. He was extradited to Alameda County to face charges. During the preliminary hearing, it was revealed that Brown had experienced significant psychological trauma due to witnessing domestic violence in his family home, which was considered a mitigating factor in his case.
