On January 23, 2023, 18-year-old Mario Navarro was fatally shot during a music video filming at a Valero gas station in East Oakland, California. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at the 5900 block of MacArthur Boulevard, where a crowd of approximately 40 to 50 people had gathered for the video shoot. During the event, multiple shooters exchanged gunfire, resulting in Navarro's death and injuries to several others.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Oakland police launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible. On March 1, 2023, authorities announced the arrest of 21-year-old Brian Cruz from San Leandro. Cruz was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and other related charges connected to the incident. At the time of his arrest, Cruz was on probation for a prior felony gun conviction from October 2022.
The shooting was characterized by law enforcement as a targeted attack, possibly linked to gang-related activities.
