Remilio "Remy" Castillo Rivera, an 18-year-old from Stockton, California, tragically lost his life on March 22, 2019. Remilio was a promising young man who had attended Franklin High School, where he excelled in academics and sports. He was part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and played varsity football, earning the title of Defensive Player of the Year. He also shone in varsity baseball, being named the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Later, he transferred to Jane Fredrick High School, from which he graduated in 2018.
On the fateful day of March 22, 2019, Remilio was one of three teenagers found shot inside a car near F Street and Finland Avenue in Stockton. The other victims were siblings Tiffany Connary, 18, and David Connary, 19. Tiffany and David were pronounced dead at the scene, while Remilio was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. This tragic incident shocked the community and prompted an outpouring of grief and condolences, including from Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs.
The investigation into the triple homicide led to the arrest of Joaquin Cruz, a 19-year-old documented gang member. Cruz was apprehended in Klamath, Oregon, and was subsequently brought back to San Joaquin County to face murder charges.
