In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in August 2020, a young life was tragically cut short in Bayou Goula, a community near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Jaion Knight, a 19-year-old female, was shot and killed on August 19, 2020. She was in the company of her boyfriend, Deandre Brown, sitting in a parked car in her grandmother's driveway when the tranquil evening was shattered by gunfire.
A lone gunman approached the vehicle, opened the driver's side door, and fired multiple shots into the car. While Brown escaped without being struck by the bullets, Knight suffered gunshot wounds to her leg, arm, and a fatal wound to her head. The assailant then fled the scene on foot. The incident was not a random act of violence; Brown later revealed to investigators that he had been receiving threatening messages from the man he identified as the shooter.
The day after the shooting, law enforcement arrested Dionte Bracken in connection with the crime. He was subsequently charged with the second-degree murder of Jaion Knight and the attempted second-degree murder of Deandre Brown. The case proceeded to trial, where a jury in Iberville Parish deliberated before finding Bracken guilty as charged on both counts in May 2022. Following his conviction, he was sentenced to a mandatory life term in prison for the murder and a concurrent fifty-year sentence for the attempted murder.
