Jose Castaneda Sandoval, a 24-year-old resident of Ceres, California, tragically lost his life on August 10, 2019, in a fatal shooting incident in San Jose. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Plaza de San Jose shopping center at Story and King roads. Sandoval was reportedly involved in a road rage altercation with Antonio Dominguez Pinal, a 25-year-old San Jose resident who was on parole at the time for a previous conviction of assault with a deadly weapon.
The confrontation escalated when Sandoval, after initially leaving the parking lot, returned and parked next to Pinal. Pinal approached Sandoval's vehicle, banged on the driver-side door, and made violent threats. When Sandoval lowered his window, Pinal fired a single shot from a .40 caliber pistol, striking Sandoval in the shoulder. Sandoval was gravely wounded and later died at a local hospital.
The investigation into Sandoval's death led to the arrest of Antonio Dominguez Pinal. Pinal was already in jail awaiting a parole revocation hearing when detectives linked him to the shooting. He was charged with murder and faced additional charges for using a firearm during the commission of the crime. The case against Pinal was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he was eventually convicted of first-degree murder on August 1, 2024. The jury also found him guilty of a sentencing enhancement for using a gun in the killing. Pinal faces up to 75 years to life in prison, with his sentencing scheduled for October 4, 2024.
The prosecution argued that Sandoval's death was a result of senseless violence, emphasizing that he was merely at the shopping center to get food and did not provoke the deadly encounter. The case highlighted the dangers of illegal firearms and the importance of removing them from the streets.
