Anthony Joe Dragt, a 56-year-old dairyman from Visalia, California, tragically lost his life on September 3, 2019. On that fateful day, Dragt was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the middle of the road near his dairy farm. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident occurred in the 10100 block of Avenue 352 in Visalia, where Dragt had been a well-known and respected member of the agricultural community.
His death sent shockwaves through the local community, leaving family, friends, and colleagues in deep mourning.
The investigation into Dragt's death quickly led to the identification of a suspect, Jorge Rivera, a former employee of Dragt's dairy. Rivera had been hired in May 2018 but had stopped showing up for work by June 2019. Following his departure, Rivera reportedly began harassing Dragt and his family. On the day of the murder, Rivera was seen on surveillance footage arriving at the dairy and inquiring about Dragt's whereabouts. Shortly after, he was captured on video at another dairy, continuing his search for Dragt. Eventually, Rivera located Dragt near his home and fatally shot him multiple times.
Rivera was apprehended later that day after a thorough investigation by the Tulare County Sheriff's Office. Detectives tracked Rivera's vehicle, a black Chrysler 200, using surveillance footage and cellphone data. He was arrested near Richgrove, California, with several firearms, including the murder weapon, found in his car. Rivera was charged with first-degree murder, along with additional charges related to firearm possession.
The legal proceedings against Rivera culminated in a trial where he was found guilty of first-degree murder with special allegations of personal use and discharge of a firearm. Rivera's prior criminal record, including a 2013 drug charge, was also considered during the trial. The conviction brought some measure of justice to Dragt's family and the community, though the loss of such a beloved figure remained deeply felt. Rivera now faces life in prison for his crimes, with sentencing scheduled for a later date.
