The altercation began when Gayle and Vaughn met at the gas station to conduct a narcotics transaction. During the transaction, a dispute arose, leading to both men drawing firearms. The situation spiraled out of control, and both men ended up shooting each other. Gayle sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Vaughn, who also suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and treated in the hospital's jail ward.
The incident did not only affect Gayle and Vaughn. Two additional individuals, who were passing by in a vehicle, were also struck by gunfire. One of these bystanders was shot in the stomach, while the other sustained a minor wound. These victims, who had no connection to the initial dispute, managed to drive themselves to a hospital for treatment.
Following the shooting, the Los Angeles Police Department launched an investigation into the incident. Detective Herman Fretlohr, with the LAPD's West Bureau Homicide Unit, led the investigation. Vaughn, who survived the shooting, faced a murder charge for his involvement in the altercation that led to Gayle's death. Detectives also questioned at least one other individual who was allegedly present at the scene, but no further arrests were made at that time. The police recovered a firearm from the scene, but additional details about the weapon were not disclosed.
