In an alley near Rancho High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, a violent encounter unfolded that would ultimately claim the life of 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis. On November 1, 2023, Lewis, a White male, was attacked by a group of approximately 15 individuals. The assault was reportedly instigated when Lewis came to the defense of a smaller friend who had been robbed by the group.
In the ensuing altercation, Lewis was severely beaten.
Following the attack, Lewis was transported to a nearby hospital and placed on life support. Tragically, his injuries, which included severe head trauma, proved to be insurmountable. He passed away on November 7, 2023. His death was ruled a homicide due to blunt force trauma. The incident drew significant media attention and sparked outrage within the community.
In the wake of Lewis's death, law enforcement launched an investigation that led to the arrests of multiple teenagers. In total, nine juveniles, ranging in age from 13 to 17, were taken into custody in connection with the beating. The suspects were identified as students of Rancho High School. Four of the older teenagers, Gianni Robinson, Damien Hernandez, Treavion Randolph, and Dontral Beaver, were charged as adults with second-degree murder.
The legal proceedings have seen some of the younger suspects enter plea agreements. In January 2024, a 15-year-old pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. The following month, two more defendants, including the 13-year-old, also pleaded guilty to the same charge. In a later development in August 2024, the four teens initially charged as adults were given the opportunity to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the juvenile court system. The trial for those charged as adults was scheduled to begin in August 2024.
