In the an early morning hour of Thursday, January 31, 2013, 55-year-old Cardell Brown, a Black male, was found deceased inside his residence in the 800 block of Jackson Avenue in New Orleans, near the edge of the St. Thomas neighborhood. An investigation by the Orleans Parish Coroner's office later confirmed his identity.
Mr. Brown had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. A friend of his reported speaking with him on the phone the prior evening around 9:30 p.m.
and said he sounded happy as usual. While authorities did not officially release a motive for the shooting, friends and neighbors harbored suspicions that it may have been the result of a robbery. They indicated that Mr. Brown had recently won money playing the lottery on a couple of occasions.
At the time of the initial reports, the New Orleans Police Department had not identified any suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation into the death of Cardell Brown was ongoing, with no immediate information released regarding any persons of interest or potential arrests.
