On March 3, 2021, Alberto Vargas, a 39-year-old resident of Hesperia, California, was found unresponsive on Live Oak Street. Responding to reports of gunshots, San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene around 12:11 p.m. and discovered Vargas lying in the roadway. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. The initial investigation revealed that Vargas had been shot, leading to the involvement of homicide detectives to further probe the circumstances surrounding his
death.
The investigation quickly identified Alexander Luna, a 25-year-old man also from Hesperia, as the primary suspect. According to reports, Vargas and Luna were walking together on Live Oak Street when, for reasons that remain unclear, Luna allegedly shot Vargas and attempted to flee the scene. Luna was subsequently detained by deputies from the Hesperia Gang Team and booked at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto on charges of murder. He was held without bail and scheduled to appear in Victorville Superior Court. However, as of the initial reports, no formal case had been filed in court records.
