Following the shooting, a man was detained by the police but was later released pending further investigation. No arrests were made immediately after the incident, and the police did not disclose any additional information about the detained individual or the motive behind the shooting. Oakland Unity High School, where Marcel was a senior, launched a GoFundMe campaign to support his family, highlighting his kindness, sense of humor, and academic aspirations. The campaign exceeded its goal, raising over $11,000.
In a significant development, Alex Foreman, a 21-year-old man, was later identified as a suspect in the case. Initially charged with two counts of murder, Foreman eventually pleaded no contest to a charge of assault with a deadly weapon as part of a plea agreement with Alameda County prosecutors. The murder charges were dropped, and Foreman was sentenced to six years in state prison. The charges stemmed from a chaotic shootout during a planned marijuana deal, where Foreman and Marcel Alley Jr. allegedly attempted to rob Isaac Mitchell. The exchange of gunfire resulted in the deaths of both teenagers.
