Byron Robinson, a 31-year-old resident of Oakland, California, tragically lost his life on November 6, 2021, in a drive-by shooting. The incident occurred around 5:37 p.m. in the 7400 block of Weld Street in East Oakland. Robinson was driving when an assailant in another vehicle opened fire, causing his car to crash into at least one parked vehicle. Despite being rushed to a hospital, Robinson succumbed to his injuries approximately three hours later.
The motive behind the shooting remained unclear initially, and no immediate arrests were made following the incident.
The investigation into Robinson's death took a significant turn when Donte Neal, a 31-year-old man from Sacramento, was arrested and charged with Robinson's murder in February 2022. Neal was accused of shooting into Robinson's car and killing him, allegedly motivated by a family feud. According to court records, Neal was identified as a suspect based on surveillance footage and information provided by Robinson's relatives. Neal, who was on parole for a previous assault conviction at the time of the homicide, denied involvement and claimed he was in Sacramento on the day of the shooting. However, police found two 9mm pistols at Neal's residence during a search.
In October 2024, Neal accepted a plea deal, resulting in a voluntary manslaughter conviction for Robinson's death. As part of the agreement, prosecutors dropped the murder and assault charges against Neal. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison. This resolution brought some closure to the case, although the tragic loss of Byron Robinson continues to resonate with his family and the Oakland community.
