Anthony Samuels, a 22-year-old resident of Oakland, California, tragically lost his life in the early morning hours of March 15, 2022. The incident occurred outside an apartment complex on the 3300 block of East 17th Street. According to court records and police reports, the fatal event was precipitated by a heated argument involving Charles Dupree, the mother of Dupree’s child, and Dupree’s godsister. The conflict arose from a suspected love triangle, which led to a last-minute eviction.
On the night of March 14, Dupree’s child’s mother expelled Dupree’s godsister from their home, suspecting an illicit romantic involvement between her and Dupree. In response, the godsister called Anthony Samuels for assistance in moving her belongings.
When Samuels arrived to help, a confrontation ensued between him and Dupree. During the altercation, Dupree allegedly shot Samuels in the head, resulting in his immediate death. Eyewitnesses reported that Dupree later admitted to the shooting, stating, “I just killed the man.” This tragic incident left Samuels as an unintended victim, as he was the least involved in the underlying dispute.
Following the incident, Charles Dupree was arrested in late May 2022 and charged with the murder of Anthony Samuels. He faced additional charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Dupree was held without bail at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California. The legal proceedings against Dupree included multiple court dates, with his next appearance scheduled for late August 2022. The case highlighted the severe consequences of domestic disputes and the tragic loss of a young life caught in the crossfire of a volatile situation.
