On April 1, 2022, Alexander Jackson-Baldwin, a 29-year-old transient, was found fatally shot outside the Green Tree Inn in Victorville, California. The incident occurred around 2:12 a.m. when deputies were dispatched to the scene after reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, they discovered Jackson-Baldwin near the entrance of the hotel with a gunshot wound. Medical personnel arrived shortly after and pronounced him dead at approximately 2:20 a.m.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department launched a homicide investigation immediately following the incident.
Through their investigation, detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide Detail identified Clarence Jones, a 32-year-old security guard from Apple Valley, as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting. Jones was arrested on July 18, 2022, at his place of business without incident. He was subsequently booked at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino and later transferred to the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, where he remains in custody on a $1 million bail. Jones faces a murder charge and is scheduled to appear in Victorville Superior Court.
The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed by the authorities. The investigation revealed that Jones was working as a security guard at the Green Tree Inn at the time of the incident. Despite the arrest, sheriff's officials have not provided details on how they concluded that Jones was the suspect.
