Donta Jerome Hayes, a 23-year-old resident of Barstow, California, tragically lost his life on May 13, 2022. The incident occurred around 6:27 p.m. near Lillian Park, located in the 900 block of Villafana Street, close to Barstow City Hall. Hayes was involved in an altercation with two males inside a silver Dodge Charger. During the dispute, both the driver and the passenger of the vehicle produced handguns and fired multiple shots at Hayes and his friend.
Hayes sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his neck and chest and was transported by friends to Barstow Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
The investigation into Hayes' death led to the identification and subsequent arrest of three suspects: James Hampton, 33, from Adelanto; Allison Hampton, 34, from Barstow; and Rasheed Ahmed Bey, 39, from Victorville. The arrests were made by Hesperia Sheriff's deputies and Las Vegas police. James Hampton was apprehended in North Las Vegas, where officers found a handgun in his possession. Allison Hampton and Rasheed Ahmed Bey were arrested during a traffic stop in Hesperia. All three suspects were booked on suspicion of killing Hayes.
James Hampton and Rasheed Ahmed Bey were identified as the main shooters in the incident. The suspects were charged with murder and other related offenses. James Hampton's bail was set at $1 million, and he was scheduled to appear in Victorville Superior Court. Allison Hampton's bail was set at $1.5 million, and she was also scheduled to appear in court. Rasheed Ahmed Bey remained in custody with bail set at $1 million.
The Barstow Police Department, along with the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner’s Division, conducted a thorough investigation, which included processing the crime scene and reviewing surveillance footage from a nearby residence. The footage captured the shooting and helped authorities identify the suspects. The case against the suspects is ongoing, with court proceedings and further investigations continuing to seek justice for Donta Jerome Hayes.
