In the early morning hours of June 25, 2014, the vibrant sounds of Frenchmen Street in New Orleans were tragically pierced by gunfire. Julius Dunn, a 21-year-old male, was struck by a bullet in a drive-by shooting that occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. in the 500 block of the famed music corridor. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
The New Orleans Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the homicide.
Detectives canvassed the area, recovering two shell casings from the scene and gathering surveillance footage from several establishments in the vicinity. An autopsy later confirmed that Dunn died from a single gunshot wound that caused extensive internal injuries, puncturing his stomach, liver, diaphragm, and right lung, among other vital organs. The manner of death was officially ruled a homicide.
Although initial reports indicated that no motive or suspects had been immediately identified, the investigation progressed. The evidence gathered eventually led to the arrest of a suspect. This individual was later brought to trial and, on September 15, 2017, a jury returned a verdict finding the defendant guilty of manslaughter. On October 20, 2017, the convicted individual was sentenced to 38 years of imprisonment at hard labor for the killing of Julius Dunn.
