On May 17, 1792, Westchester Deputy Sheriff Isaac Smith was fatally shot while investigating a disturbance at Hunt’s Inn, a tavern located near what is now West Farms Road and 167th Street in the Bronx. At the time, this area was part of Westchester County. Smith was responding to a request for assistance from a constable when he encountered John Ryer, a known troublemaker and British loyalist.
