In the a neighborhood of Manhattan, a male New York City Police Patrolman named William Baumeister, assigned to the 29th Precinct, would find his life cut short in a violent encounter. On the evening of November 29, 1900, while on duty at 113th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues, Patrolman Baumeister witnessed a brutal assault. He saw one man strike another in the head with a brick, followed by the chilling sound of a gunshot.
Without hesitation, the patrolman moved to intervene and
apprehend the assailant. As he confronted the man, the suspect turned his weapon on the officer, firing a shot that would prove fatal. Despite being grievously wounded, Patrolman Baumeister demonstrated immense courage and dedication to his duty. He managed to strike the 33-year-old suspect with his nightstick, a last act of defiance to ensure the man could not escape justice.
His valiant efforts were not in vain. Patrolman Baumeister held onto the suspect, a testament to his strength and resolve, until fellow officers arrived at the scene to take the man into custody. The suspect was subsequently arrested and faced the charge of murder. Tragically, Patrolman William Baumeister succumbed to his gunshot wound the following day, on November 30, 1900. His ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, a harrowing tale of bravery in the face of sudden violence, left a somber mark on the city he swore to protect.
