On a spring evening, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a terrifying case of mistaken identity. Dominick Anthony Ragucci, an 18-year-old male college student, was working as a door-to-door salesman on Long Island, New York, to pay for his tuition. He had no connections to the criminal underworld, a fact that made his violent death all the more senseless.
On April 19, 1979, his path fatefully crossed with that of a paranoid and dangerous member of the Gambino crime family.
Roy DeMeo, a notorious and feared figure in organized crime, spotted Ragucci's car parked outside his Massapequa Park home. Consumed by fear of reprisal from a Cuban drug cartel he had recently wronged, DeMeo mistakenly believed the young salesman was a hitman sent to assassinate him. This fatal misjudgment triggered a high-speed chase. Along with his crew members, Joseph Guglielmo and Frederick DiNome, DeMeo pursued the terrified teenager for seven miles through the streets of Amityville and Farmingdale. The chase ended when DeMeo pulled alongside Ragucci's vehicle and opened fire, killing the innocent young man.
The brazenness of the public murder reportedly caused significant turmoil within the Gambino family. DeMeo's superior, Nino Gaggi, was said to be furious about the killing of an uninvolved civilian, which brought unwanted attention to their criminal enterprise. The fallout from Ragucci's death is believed to have contributed to the escalating tensions and violence within DeMeo's crew. While DeMeo was reportedly remorseful upon learning he had killed an innocent student, his sorrow did nothing to alter the tragic outcome.
Ultimately, direct justice for Dominick Ragucci's murder in a court of law was never fully realized. Roy DeMeo was himself murdered in January 1983 before he could be prosecuted for this, or the numerous other killings he was suspected of committing. While members of his crew were eventually convicted of various racketeering charges, which included other murders, the specific accountability for the senseless death of Dominick Anthony Ragucci was largely overshadowed by the violent demise of his killer.
