On what was supposed to be a day off, fifty-year-old Deputy Sheriff Kieran John Kenny Grant, a male officer with the Westchester County Sheriff's Department, was killed in the line of duty in Hastings-on-Hudson. An 18-year veteran of the department, Grant was serving an eviction notice at an apartment building on Southside Avenue. Because he had planned to be off that day, he was not armed and therefore unable to defend himself from the events that tragically unfolded.
While attempting to serve the warrant, the male tenant, who was 39 years old at the time, opened fire on Deputy Grant with a. 45 caliber handgun. The initial shots struck Grant three times at close range, causing him to fall to the ground. In a brutal escalation of the attack, the assailant then stood over the wounded deputy and fired three more shots into his back as he attempted to crawl away down the hallway.
The suspect was apprehended and subsequently sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of Deputy Sheriff Grant. He would not complete his full sentence, however, as he died in prison on July 6, 2014, just two weeks before he was scheduled for his sixth parole hearing. Deputy Grant was survived by his wife and three children, leaving behind a grieving family and a community mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant.
