On the afternoon of October 20, 1981, Waverly Brown, a 45-year-old African American police officer in Nyack, New York, was on duty. Known affectionately as 'Chipper,' he was a respected figure in the community and the first Black officer in the Nyack police department, where he had served for 15 years. His day, however, would end in a brutal act of violence that stemmed from a brazen armored car robbery.
