In the late morning of May 22, 2020, a violent encounter in the village of Nyack, New York, tragically ended the life of 30-year-old Ryan L. Franklin of West Haverstraw. Franklin, a male, was shot and severely wounded on South Midland Avenue. Orangetown Police Department officers responded to the scene around 10:05 a.m. and found him between Depew Avenue and Main Street.
The man responsible for the shooting, Jason Max Jabouin, then 33, who had addresses in Haverstraw and Fayetteville,
North Carolina, fled the state after the incident. His freedom was short-lived, however, as he was apprehended in Maryland during a traffic stop less than 24 hours after the shooting. An investigation led to Jabouin being identified as the primary suspect, and he was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery. Authorities also stated that Jabouin stole Franklin's cellphone after shooting him.
Following his arrest, Jabouin was extradited back to New York to face the charges against him. He was arraigned virtually and sent to the Rockland County Jail. In May 2021, Jabouin pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. The plea was part of an agreement that would see him sentenced to a significant prison term for his role in Franklin's death. In November 2021, a judge sentenced Jason Jabouin to 20 years in state prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision. While the exact details of the confrontation that led to the shooting have not been publicly disclosed, the resolution of the case brought a measure of closure to the community.
