On the afternoon of March 10, 1993, a decorated undercover detective with the Manhattan South Narcotics unit, Luis Lopez, was killed in the line of duty. At 35 years of age, the eight-year veteran of the force was engaged in a buy-and-bust operation on East First Street. He was arranging to purchase a significant quantity of marijuana and several firearms from a group of individuals.
The operation took a fatal turn when Detective Lopez went to retrieve the $10,000 in buy money from his
vehicle. Upon his return to the location, he was ambushed and shot in the chest. The shooting occurred at approximately 3:58 p.m. in front of a t-shirt shop. Despite being rushed to Bellevue Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries about an hour later.
In the aftermath of the shooting, three suspects were apprehended in connection with the murder. The individual identified as the shooter, who was 23 years old at the time, was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and the sale of marijuana. He received a sentence of 55 years to life in prison. In 2002, an appeal for a hearing to review his sentence was granted. Detective Lopez was survived by his wife and two teenage children. Following in his father's footsteps, his son, Luis Lopez, Jr., also joined the New York City Police Department and has since become a Detective Second Grade.
