On March 10, 1993, Detective Luis R. Lopez, a 35-year-old undercover officer with the Manhattan South Narcotics team, was tragically killed during a buy-and-bust operation on East First Street in Manhattan, New York. Detective Lopez was in the process of purchasing ten pounds of marijuana and an undisclosed number of firearms when he informed the suspects that he needed to retrieve the $10,000 buy money from his car.
