Dennis McCarthy, a 52-year-old white man, died on December 7, 1993, after an ordinary evening commute turned into a nightmare on the Long Island Rail Road. That day, the 5:33 p.m. train left Penn Station packed with riders heading home, stopping at Jamaica in Queens before continuing east. Somewhere along that familiar route, the rhythm of the ride broke into panic and gunfire, and McCarthy became one of six people who would not make it home.
