In the winter of 1995, a horrific act of violence cut short the life of 17-year-old Paola Andrea Lopez in the College Point neighborhood of Queens, New York. On January 7th, a dispute over money led to a brutal massacre inside an apartment, claiming the lives of six people, including Paola, her 15-year-old sister Carla Lopez, and their 42-year-old mother, Maria Ramirez.
The tragedy unfolded when two men, Jose Angulo and Victor Rodriguez, entered the apartment with the intention of
confronting Maria Ramirez's partner, Alex DeJesus, over a loan. Armed with a silenced 9mm pistol, they first shot and killed DeJesus and his cousin, Pablo Villanueva Calle Soto, upon their arrival. The assailants then turned their attention to the women and girls in the home. Paola, along with her mother, sister, and a 16-year-old family friend, Melinda Wynns, were bound before being shot and stabbed to death. In a miraculous turn of events, one intended victim survived the attack despite being shot and having her throat cut, and was able to alert the authorities.
The subsequent investigation led to the capture of Jose Angulo and Victor Rodriguez. The two Cuban nationals were tried for their heinous crimes. The court found them guilty of the murders, and both men were sentenced to 170 years in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring they would spend the remainder of their lives behind bars for the senseless killings that devastated a family and shocked the community.
