In the summer of 2015, a young man's life was cut tragically short in New Orleans, Louisiana. Brandon 'BEE' Joseph Sarapuru, a 21-year-old male, was fatally shot in the chest on June 3, 2015. The incident occurred in New Orleans East, down the street from the home of Shantrell Knox, during an altercation. It is believed that Sarapuru was an innocent bystander caught in the conflict.
Witnesses at the scene identified Torrel Knox as a primary participant in the fight, stating they saw him
flee with a gun after the shooting. The investigation that followed led authorities to the home of Knox's mother, Shantrell Knox, where they discovered the suspected murder weapon. The gun was found wrapped in a towel that was linked to Torrel Knox through DNA analysis. By November of that year, an arrest warrant was issued for Knox, but he had already fled the city. Before Knox was identified as the primary suspect, another man, Robert Mitchell, had been arrested for the slaying, but prosecutors later dropped the charges against him in March.
For years, Torrel Knox remained a fugitive. His time on the run came to an end in September 2018 when U.S. Marshals captured him at his mother's residence. At the time of his arrest, he was found to be in possession of an illegally concealed weapon. Following his capture, Knox allegedly threatened the arresting officers, boasting that he could make one phone call to have them killed. He also expressed confidence that he would evade conviction, claiming to have connections within the judicial system. Knox's mother was also arrested and booked with being an accessory after the fact to murder for allegedly hiding her son from law enforcement. Torrel Knox, who has a prior conviction for negligent homicide, was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, public intimidation, and illegal gun possession in connection with Brandon Sarapuru's death.
