In the spring of 2007, the quiet community of Margaretville, New York, became the backdrop for a tragedy that would claim the life of a dedicated public servant. On April 25th, 29-year-old New York State Trooper David Brinkerhoff was killed in the line of duty. His death was the culmination of an intense manhunt for a fugitive that had begun with another officer being wounded.
The events leading to Trooper Brinkerhoff's death began a day earlier when a fellow trooper stopped a stolen
vehicle in Margaretville. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Travis Trim, opened fire on the trooper, striking him in his protective vest before fleeing into the nearby woods. This brazen act triggered a massive search involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the New York State Police and the Delaware County Sheriff's Department. The manhunt extended through the rugged terrain as officers scoured the area for the armed and dangerous suspect.
The search eventually led a team of troopers, including David Brinkerhoff, to a residence on Cemetery Road the following day. A burglar alarm at the home had been activated, raising suspicions that the fugitive may be inside. As members of the Mobile Response Team entered the house to conduct a search, they were met with gunfire from Trim, who had barricaded himself on the second floor. In the ensuing close-quarters gun battle, Trooper Brinkerhoff was struck by a bullet. Tragically, it was later determined that the fatal shot was accidentally fired by another trooper during the chaotic exchange. Another officer was also wounded by the suspect during the firefight.
Following the intense shootout, law enforcement officers surrounded the home, leading to a lengthy standoff that lasted for over nine hours. As police attempted to force the suspect out by deploying tear gas, a fire erupted and quickly engulfed the house. After the blaze was extinguished, authorities discovered the remains of Travis Trim inside. An investigation concluded that Trim had been fatally wounded by Trooper Brinkerhoff during the initial exchange of gunfire. David Brinkerhoff, an 8-and-a-half-year veteran of the New York State Police, was survived by his wife and their infant daughter.
