On a Friday afternoon in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York, Zurana Zuri Horton, a 34-year-old mother, was fatally shot while shielding a group of children from gunfire. The tragic incident occurred on October 21, 2011, near a local elementary school just as students were being dismissed for the day. Horton was waiting to pick up her own children when the shooting began.
In a final act of heroism, she used her body to cover several youngsters, a selfless move that likely saved their lives. Two other people were also injured in the chaos: an 11-year-old girl who was grazed by a bullet and a 31-year-old woman who was shot in the arm.
The shooting was the result of a gang-related dispute. Investigators determined that the gunman had fired from the rooftop of a nearby building, targeting rivals on the street below. Horton was not the intended target but was tragically caught in the crossfire. The investigation quickly led police to three brothers. Andrew Lopez, who was 18 years old at the time, was identified as the shooter and subsequently arrested. His brothers, Jonathan Carrasquillo and Kristian Lopez, were also taken into custody in connection with the incident.
Andrew Lopez was charged with murder, felony assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Lopez fired a 9 mm handgun 13 times from the rooftop. Despite an initial confession to the police, Lopez later proclaimed his innocence in court. In April 2013, a jury found him guilty of Horton's murder and two counts of assault for the injuries sustained by the other two victims. He was subsequently sentenced to 55 years to life in prison. His brother, Jonathan Carrasquillo, was acquitted of murder and other charges. The third brother, Kristian Lopez, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
