In the quiet hamlet of Palenville, New York, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded on August 10, 2014, leading to the death of 51-year-old Daniel F. Brennan, Sr. of Schenectady. On that Sunday, Brennan was at a home on Pennsylvania Avenue with his girlfriend, 49-year-old Pammi Mroczek. The residence belonged to Pammi's estranged husband, Robert Mroczek, a 46-year-old New York State Parole Officer.
It is believed that Pammi Mroczek had returned to the home to retrieve some of her
belongings, accompanied by Brennan, and did not expect her estranged husband to be there. However, Robert Mroczek arrived and discovered his wife with Brennan. In what authorities have described as a fit of rage, Robert Mroczek opened fire, shooting both of them multiple times with a 9mm handgun. First responders, alerted by neighbors who heard the gunshots, arrived at the scene to find Daniel Brennan deceased in the driveway from multiple gunshot wounds.
After a tense situation where it was unknown if the suspect was still in the house, the State Police Special Operations Response team entered the residence and found Pammi Mroczek also deceased inside the foyer. Robert Mroczek had fled the scene, prompting a massive police response.
The manhunt for Mroczek ended later that day after a high-speed chase that spanned multiple counties. Police spotted his vehicle over 100 miles away and pursued him at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The chase concluded when police deployed stop sticks, causing Mroczek's car to go off the road. As law enforcement approached the vehicle, they found Robert Mroczek had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Due to the perpetrator's suicide, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Daniel Brennan and Pammi Mroczek. The incident was investigated as a double murder-suicide, and according to police, there had been no prior reports of domestic disputes at the Mroczek's Palenville home.
