On the evening of April 28, 2020, a verbal dispute on Millington Street in Mount Vernon, New York, escalated into a fatal act of violence. Kashawn Smith, a 28-year-old male resident of the city, was shot five times at approximately 10:00 p.m. The bullets struck him in the head, chest, torso, and back. Emergency services transported Smith to Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led law enforcement to identify John Bobbitt, a
45-year-old man from Mount Vernon who was an acquaintance of Smith, as the suspect. A multi-agency investigation involving the Mount Vernon Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Newark Police Department, the Westchester County District Attorney's Office, and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office tracked Bobbitt to a relative's home in Newark, New Jersey. He was apprehended there on July 13, 2020, and subsequently returned to New York to face charges.
John Bobbitt was charged with Murder in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. After a three-week trial in Westchester County Court, a jury found him guilty on both counts on February 7, 2023. On May 19, 2023, Bobbitt was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for the murder of Kashawn Smith. The prosecution highlighted the callous and violent nature of the crime, and with the sentencing, officials declared that justice had been secured for Smith and his family.
