In the spring of 2020, a young man's life was tragically cut short in what should have been the safety of his own home. Ryan Solomon, a 23-year-old male, resided in an apartment on South Third Avenue in Mount Vernon, New York. On the afternoon of April 26th, a heated argument erupted between Solomon and his roommate, Akeem Palmer. The dispute escalated with devastating swiftness, culminating in Palmer fatally shooting Solomon.
Despite his severe injuries, Solomon managed to make a desperate call to 911 for help.
First responders arrived at the scene and rushed Solomon to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. Medical professionals fought to save him, but his wounds proved too severe, and he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The Mount Vernon Police Department launched an immediate investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led to the swift apprehension of Akeem Palmer, who was taken into custody on the very same day the tragic incident unfolded.
The legal process moved forward, and a Westchester County Grand Jury, the first to be assembled since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, handed down an indictment against Palmer. The charges included murder and criminal possession of a weapon. In the end, Akeem Palmer pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. On March 24, 2022, the judicial proceedings concluded when Palmer was sentenced to 15 years in state prison, followed by a period of post-release supervision.
