In the early hours of March 14, 2018, the life of 24-year-old Donovan Brown was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in his hometown of Mount Vernon, New York. A graduate of Nellie Thornton High School, Brown was working as a lifeguard and studying to become a pharmacy technician. His death sent ripples of grief through his community, leaving his family and friends to grapple with the sudden and violent loss.
The events that led to Brown's death began on the night of March
13, 2018, and stretched into the following morning. A series of criminal acts unfolded, culminating in a fatal confrontation. Tasjawn 'Tay' White, then 19 years old, along with an associate, Pierre Mensah, were involved in a robbery. Later, when the initial robbery victim returned with Brown and another individual to the area near The Modern apartment building on South Macquesten Parkway to look for the stolen items, a second attempted robbery occurred. It was during this second incident that Brown was shot in the face. Another person with Brown was also injured in the shooting.
The Mount Vernon Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the homicide. Detectives were able to trace the movements of both the suspects and the victims in the hours leading up to and immediately after the shooting by meticulously reviewing video surveillance footage from the area. This crucial evidence helped to piece together the sequence of events and identify those responsible. The investigation led to the arrest of Tasjawn White, who was identified as the shooter. Two other individuals, Pierre Mensah and his uncle, Phillip Spearman, were also implicated and arrested in connection with the crime spree.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Tasjawn White faced a host of serious charges, including first-degree murder. In November 2019, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, attempted murder, and robbery. In February 2021, a judge sentenced him to 20 years to life in prison for the murder, with a concurrent sentence for the other charges. During the sentencing, the judge remarked on the 'horrific nature' of the crime, and Brown's mother spoke of how the defendant 'took a good man off this earth.' Pierre Mensah was also charged with numerous felonies, including second-degree murder and attempted murder. Phillip Spearman faced charges related to criminal possession of a weapon and hindering prosecution for his role after the shooting.
