A trip to Schenectady, New York, to celebrate a close friend's daughter's eighth birthday ended in tragedy for a Brooklyn man. Danny Russell, a 44-year-old father of three, was fatally shot on a city street late on Labor Day in 2014. Russell had spent the day at Lake George with his childhood friend, Carlos Seebarran, and their families. After returning to Schenectady in the early evening, Russell later left the house.
Shortly after 11:30 p.m.
on September 1, 2014, residents reported hearing an argument followed by multiple gunshots in the Vale neighborhood. Seebarran was alerted by a neighbor that his friend had been shot. He rushed down Catherine Street to find Russell lying in front of a vacant home, struggling to breathe from several gunshot wounds. Emergency services were called, and paramedics arrived within minutes to treat Russell. He was transported to Ellis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
In the days following the shooting, police had no immediate suspects. Seebarran described his friend as a 'beautiful, smiling, happy person' who didn't have conflicts with anyone and could not fathom a reason for the shooting. The investigation eventually led to an arrest.
In February 2015, Gammen Knight, a 24-year-old Schenectady resident, was arrested and arraigned on a charge of second-degree murder for the death of Danny Russell. Authorities stated that the motive for the shooting stemmed from an earlier dispute. Russell had reportedly intervened in a fight between the mother of his child and the mother of Knight's child. It is alleged that in retaliation for this intervention, Knight shot Russell multiple times. Following his arraignment, Knight was jailed without bail pending further court proceedings.
