On August 12, 2023, at approximately 1:45 a.m., Akron police responded to a residence in the 2200 block of 8th Street Southwest, where they found 45-year-old Veronica Bell lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center in critical condition and succumbed to her injuries on August 15.
Investigations revealed that an altercation had occurred inside the home prior to the shooting.
Family members reported that Bell was attempting to protect a friend involved in a domestic dispute when she was shot. After intervening, Bell exited the residence and was shot multiple times in the back.
Authorities identified 40-year-old Dakinga D. York as a suspect. He fled the scene but turned himself in on August 16. York was charged with murder and felonious assault. In May 2024, he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence. The court sentenced him to 15 to 20½ years in prison.
Veronica Bell was remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and friend, known for her generosity and willingness to help others. Her family and community continue to mourn her loss.
