In the summer of 2015, the Hamilton Hill neighborhood of Schenectady was gripped by a series of shootings that shattered the community's sense of peace. It was amidst this backdrop of violence that 18-year-old Kusaan Tolliver, a male resident, lost his life. On the evening of July 27th, outside a residence on Schenectady Street, Tolliver was fatally shot, becoming another victim of the gun violence plaguing the area.
The incident was not isolated, as another man had been wounded in a shooting in the same vicinity just four days prior, and another would be shot multiple times in the chest on the same street in early August.
The investigation into Tolliver's death quickly pointed towards a suspect, but he had fled the area, leading to a months-long search. In December of that year, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 21-year-old Jason Monforte in Troy. Monforte, also known as 'J5,' was no stranger to violence, having been a victim of a shooting himself in 2012. He was initially charged with second-degree murder, criminal use of a firearm, and weapon possession for the death of Kusaan Tolliver.
In February 2016, Jason Monforte appeared before a Schenectady County judge and pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. He admitted to shooting Tolliver, a tragic escalation of a physical altercation that had occurred earlier on the day of the murder. The altercation had reportedly involved Tolliver, at least two of his friends, and Monforte, with one of Tolliver's friends allegedly threatening Monforte's mother with a gun. As a result of his guilty plea, Monforte was sentenced to 25 years in prison, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a story that ended one young life and irrevocably altered another. He was also ordered to pay $3,362 in restitution and will be subject to five years of supervision after his release.
