In the light of a Syracuse day, the life of 19-year-old Marquell Givens was brought to an abrupt and violent end. On November 18, 2014, while walking down a street with three other individuals, Givens was fatally shot in the back of the head. The suddenness of the act left a community in shock and a family grappling with an unbearable loss. The male victim's death would quickly become the subject of an intense police investigation aimed at bringing the person responsible to justice.
Investigators soon focused on Isiah Graham as the primary suspect. According to court records, a man who was walking alongside Graham at the time of the shooting came forward as a witness and identified Graham as the individual who pulled the trigger. The motive for this brutal act, as pieced together by law enforcement, was the theft of a pistol that belonged to Givens. The investigation revealed that immediately after shooting Givens, Graham allegedly stole the victim's firearm.
A week following the murder, a separate incident involving shots fired led police to Isiah Graham. After a foot chase, during which officers pursued him through a yard, police recovered a revolver and a pistol. Forensic analysis of the pistol confirmed that it was the one taken from Marquell Givens. Furthermore, DNA evidence collected from the pistol was a match to Isiah Graham, solidifying the case against him.
Isiah Graham was subsequently arrested and stood trial for the murder of Marquell Givens. On December 18, 2015, a jury found him guilty of murder in the second degree, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and petit larceny. The conviction was later unanimously affirmed by an appellate court.
