In a tragic turn of events stemming from a gang rivalry, 25-year-old Randell Cassimy lost his life on January 25, 2015. The fatal encounter unfolded inside a Springfield Gardens apartment building in Queens, NY, when a dispute between Cassimy and a 20-year-old rival gang member, Shawn Van Williams, escalated.
The confrontation took a deadly turn when Shawn's brother, Shane Van Williams, intervened and discharged a firearm.
The bullet, intended for Cassimy, passed through him and struck Shawn Van Williams in the head. Shane Van Williams then fired a second shot, which proved fatal for Cassimy.
When police responded to a 911 call, they discovered both Cassimy and Shawn Van Williams with gunshot wounds to their heads. Cassimy was pronounced dead at the scene. Shawn Van Williams was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries five days later.
Shane Van Williams, who was on probation for robbery at the time, fled the scene following the shooting. Law enforcement identified him as the suspect and sought public assistance in locating him. The investigation concluded that the shooting was the result of an ongoing feud between rival gangs. Despite the identification of a suspect, the investigation remained active as he was not immediately apprehended.
