In the early hours of May 8, 2015, in Harlem, a dispute over a drug debt culminated in the death of 17-year-old Deiondre Viera. The young man, known as 'Gutta,' was involved with a local group of drug dealers. The conflict reportedly arose because Viera owed money to Shawn Young, also known as 'S-Dot,' who was identified as the leader of the drug crew Viera worked for.
The situation escalated when Kiheam Johnson became involved on behalf of Young.
Johnson traveled from the Bronx to Manhattan, where he met with Young and was given a gun. Shortly after, at approximately 2:23 a.m., Johnson approached a car where Viera was seated and opened fire. Viera was shot multiple times and was deceased upon arrival at the hospital. An earlier altercation had occurred at a deli, about 45 minutes before the fatal shooting, involving Young, Viera, and another individual known as 'Z-Money,' who had tried to intervene on Viera's behalf.
Following an investigation, Kiheam Johnson was arrested and charged with the murder of Deiondre Viera. During police interviews, Johnson confessed to the killing, stating that he had done it for Young and that Young had provided him with the weapon. He claimed to have learned that Viera was planning to kill Young and that he acted first.
Kiheam Johnson was convicted of murder in a jury trial. On April 6, 2017, he was sentenced to an aggregate term of 40 years to life in prison for his role in the shooting death of Deiondre Viera. The prosecution successfully argued that Johnson had committed the murder at the behest of Shawn Young over the money Viera owed. Another man, identified as a witness to Viera's murder, was himself shot and killed in Harlem about two blocks from the original crime scene on October 28, 2015, with police investigating a possible connection of that murder as retaliation for Viera's death.
