On what was supposed to be a day of celebration, her 38th birthday, Emily Carson's life was tragically cut short in a shocking act of violence on a street in Geneva, New York. A registered nurse in the emergency department at Geneva General Hospital and a mother of three, Ms. Carson was shot and killed on Sunday, February 21, 2016, in a murder-suicide perpetrated by a man with whom she had been in a relationship.
The incident unfolded late that Sunday morning on Exchange Street, where
witnesses reported seeing a violent altercation between Carson and 35-year-old Pedro Pacheco. The confrontation escalated with Pacheco physically assaulting Carson before fatally shooting her multiple times. He then turned the gun on himself, dying at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emergency services were called, and while Pacheco was pronounced dead at the scene, Emily Carson was rushed to Geneva General Hospital, the very place where she worked to save others' lives, where she succumbed to her injuries.
